Paper War is a one-on-one strategy board game, with a four-player variant. The goal: get three or more pieces into the opponent's camp, or eliminate all of the opponent's pieces.

My contributionSolo project: rules design, prototyping, rulebook, playtests, and making the board and pieces.

My work

Game Design

Rules and pieces

Each piece has its own movement: pencil, big pencil, quill, eraser, wall and trap. Each turn, players chain actions that each have a weight, and the turn ends when the total reaches 1.

Level Design

4-player variant

The board takes the shape of a cross: a neutral zone in the middle, and one camp at the end of each arm. The rest of the rules stay the same.

QA

Prototype and playtests

Prototyped the game and ran playtest sessions.

ResultThe playtests reshaped the pieces' movement patterns, several minor rules, the balancing and the weight of the actions.

Documentation

Rulebook

Wrote the rulebook.

Art

Crafting

Made the board and the pieces by hand.

On a grid board, two players face each other with pieces that each have their own movement. During their turn, players can take several actions depending on their weight: when the total reaches 1, the turn ends. Pencil: 1 square up, down, left or right. Move 0.5, elimination 1. Eliminates pencils, big pencils and erasers. Big pencil: 2 squares up, down, left or right, and can land on walls. Move and elimination 1. Eliminates pencils, big pencils and erasers. Quill: 2 squares, diagonally only, and can fly over walls without landing on them. Move 1. Eliminates no piece. Eraser: 1 square in every direction, diagonals included. Move and elimination 1. Eliminates pencils, big pencils, erasers, quills and walls. Wall: placed anywhere on the player's side. Placing 0.5. Trap: placed anywhere on the player's side. Placing 0.5. Eliminates every piece.
